The Boys of Summer

Oct 23, 2024

3 min read

My grandkids' world is a magical fishbowl, particularly in the summertime. It's pure delight whenever I can dive into their realm with them; a state of mind where time moves slowly, possibilities abound, and fun is the necessary ingredient of every activity! Tying a fisherman's knot can be a great adventure, and reeling in a wily bass is like a plunge in the fountain of youth.

All too soon, their perpetual summer will draw to a close and they will find themselves adrift in our world, the grown-up zone where time flies, responsibilities are legion, and the mortgage (or rent) payment is due every month. Tragically, for the first time in a century or longer, American young people will chafe under the rule of elite politicians who want to define their dreams for them. In this emerging nightmare:

  • Basic human rights are no longer God-given because the deep state doesn't acknowledge God and can snatch all those rights away for the greater good.

  • Freedom of speech is dismissed as a fascist tool. It must be thrown overboard in the fight against disinformation, a term first popularized long before the birth of the internet by communist apparatchiks determined to bolster the tragic illusions of the former Soviet Union.

  • Freedom of religion has been reframed as freedom of worship. Subjects may do whatever they wish inside their church buildings unless there's a pandemic. But in the real world outside, all such freedom of expression has fallen prey to higher priorities: compliance and fear of the mob.

  • Traditional convictions like faith, honesty, fairness, generosity, and self-control must die with the old world. Ours is a brave new world where climate change, defiance, victimhood, and open-mindedness are the new virtues.

Life seemed simpler when I first began to study the Revelation of Jesus Christ nearly three decades ago. Our government was limited and mostly benevolent. The American Dream of freedom, our unhindered pursuit of happiness, was the envy of the world. The beast already had a familiar face: first, Nazism in Germany and then Communism in the Soviet Union, but we would never have dreamed of his arrival in the United States. Now sadly, our nation's capital is under siege by that same totalitarian instinct: the ambition of government to play God.

One day, your grandkids and mine will bid farewell to that enchanted bubble that belongs only to the young and just for a while. But you and I must resolve that they will never be forced to struggle for human dignity under the brutal, iron-fisted control of a twenty-first-century beast. We inherited a free, prosperous nation. We must leave those same rights and privileges to our sons and daughters, our grandchildren.

Support and encourage leaders who cherish First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and religion. Resist governing authorities who demand you must think a certain way or bite your lip. Reject the cruel lie that half your countrymen are hateful enemies. Pray for revival in cold American churches. And train up this next generation of young people to rely on God, themselves, and their families; not faceless bureaucrats from the government, here to help. It's only a start, but let's begin somewhere right now.

"Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints." Revelation 13:10 (ESV).
